Paul practiced as a veterinary surgeon from 1979 to 1993. He operated his own practice and subsequently entered into partnership. Paul then undertook legal studies. He was admitted as a solicitor and worked primarily in the fields of litigation and commercial law. Before joining Fisher Adams Kelly, Paul worked with a leading Melbourne based firm of Patent and Trade Marks Attorneys. Paul is a trustee and former Queensland regional chairperson of LES ANZ Inc, and a former committee member of the Intellectual Property Society of Australian and New Zealand (IPSANZ)
